Sean Leather > After lunch, Darshana and Sean drove to the Union Buildings, the official seat of the South African government. These are the gardens in front with the Pretoria city center in the background.

Sean Leather > From a sign: "We've probably all heard the loud, familiar 'ha ha ha de ha' call of the Hadeda Ibis early in the morning and at dusk, as it travels to and from its roosting and feeding grounds."When disturbed, these birds make noisy, penetrating screeches before taking off rather clumsily — once airborne, they are graceful flyers."They pair for life and roost in colonies. In the breeding season the red on the bill turns bright crimson. Both birds sit on the eggs and care for the chicks."

Sean Leather > From a sign: "All the plants in this bed belong to the Euphorbia family (Euphorbiaceae), named after Euphorbus, a Greek medical doctor who lived in the first century."Euphorbias all have a sticky, milky, white sap which can be quite poisonous and may even blind you if it gets into your eyes. Most eastern African euphorbias are covered with thorns, especially those growing in the warm and dry areas."Some are neat, pin-cushion-like species, hugging rocks. Others are tall, dense, and tree-like, with thickened, succulent branches or stems. The milkweeds have finger-like stems, some with small leaves. On the Highveld, one finds finger-like species with underground stems."
